Investigators believe that underage drinking played a role in a fatal accident that recently occurred near Lewiston. The one-car accident, which took place on Hillside Road outside the town, sent four people to Chicago-area hospitals. A 19-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators report that she had been riding in the front of the car when it veered off the road and struck a tree on the vehicle’s passenger side on the evening of April 18.
The victims also included a 15-year-old male and 17-year-old female, who were treated at local hospitals following the car accident. Further information regarding these passengers has not been released. Another passenger, an 18-year-old male, was treated at a hospital after the accident and then released. The driver, a 20-year-old female, was also treated at the hospital.
Investigators believe that alcohol played a role in the accident because they reportedly found several open and sealed cans of alcohol at the scene. The driver was issued a ticket for illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. It is possible that other charges will be filed regarding the death of the passenger after the investigation is completed.
When there is a car accident death, investigators must piece together the events that led to the accident. In addition to the police working on this investigation, attorneys may also play a role by talking with witnesses and reviewing the evidence in order to possibly pinpoint the liable party or parties in order to help surviving victims of the accident recover compensation for their medical expenses, missed work and pain and suffering.
