An elderly couple was hurt in a truck accident after a negligent driver rammed into their van. The suspect drove a tractor-trailer and did not see traffic slowing down for a red light. He rear-ended their minivan, and then their minivan hit another vehicle.
The pair was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment of their injuries. The suspect and the two people in the third vehicle were not hurt in the accident. Everyone involved was wearing their seatbelts. The suspect was ticketed for inattentive driving, and the accident resulted in the closure of roads for about 90 minutes.
The suspect has been ticketed for causing an accident and could face fines or other sanctions because of his distracted driving. However, he could also be held liable civilly for the damages and injuries he caused to the elderly couple. Accident victims may go through a long process of recovery, which can be costly and might involve surgery, long hospital stays, rehabilitation therapy and expensive medical equipment. Paying for these expenses can overwhelm people who may have been put in this situation through no fault of their own.
A personal injury attorney can advise injured parties of their rights and support them as they seek financial recourse in an unjust situation. Lawyers can review the circumstances surrounding the accident and look at how the responsible party needs to be held accountable for the damages they inflicted upon the victim. A lawyer often makes a recommendation regarding fair financial compensation for the pain and suffering the victims have endured.
