On the evening of May 8, a motorcycle rider died in a collision with a vehicle in the South Side Roseland area, according to police sources. The motorcycle accident took place on South Cottage Grove Avenue. Authorities have not yet released any information regarding the cause of the crash.
The 21-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The crash is being investigated by the police’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
Motorcycle accidents often produce serious or fatal injuries for motorcycle riders due to the lack of protection they have in the event of a collision. While drivers and passengers in motor vehicles have safety belts, air bags and other forms of protection, motorcycle riders have little to protect them from impact. They are often ejected from their bikes, which can lead to serious physical trauma if they strike a stationary object such as a fence or a building or fall into the road. While helmets provide some degree of protection, even with helmets, many motorcyclists suffer serious head and brain injuries, internal organ damage, broken bones and other physical trauma. Furthermore, many motorcycle accidents are not the fault of the motorcycle rider but of a driver who fails to yield or does not take proper precautions to avoid a collision with a motorcycle rider.
A motorcycle accident attorney may be able to help the victim of a motorcycle accident recover damages for pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages and disabilities caused by a careless driver. A motorcycle accident attorney may also help the family of a fatal motorcycle accident victim recover damages under a wrongful death lawsuit if the death was caused by a reckless or negligent driver.
